2023 Women at the Helm Weekend
August 26, 2023 @ 08:00 - August 27, 2023 @ 17:00
Club Nautique’s Inaugural Women at the Helm Weekend
This is a two day sailing event for women by women! Every single session will be led by a woman! We’ve brought together the women of Club Nautique to create a weekend full of education, connection, and most importantly sailing! This event is geared towards women who already have some level of experience, think Basic Keelboat/ASA 101 and up through passage making experience. Participants will be grouped based on skill level and assigned to boats commensurate with that skill level so that even the more experienced sailors will find the sessions informative and challenging.
Whether you received your sailing training through Club Nautique, another school, or other on-the-water training you’ll have the opportunity to enhance your skills by learning from other women on the water. Build your skills and confidence to become a better sailor and meet other women to go sailing with. Come join us for this action-packed, fun-filled weekend.

Session Descriptions
Morning Sessions | |
Navigation I | This one hour introduction to navigation will cover the basics for planning a day of sailing around the Bay. The session will include tides & currents, weather, buoys, trip planning, distance, time and speed. At the end of the session you’ll know how to plan the perfect day of sailing with your friends and family. |
Navigation II | This two hour session on navigation is for those who have a foundation on the topics covered in Navigation I. During this session you’ll learn how to use the chart plotter to plan your trip and navigate around the Bay. |
Communications | During the course of the hour you’ll learn radio communication skills including how to do a radio call, the different radio stations and what they are used for, how to call for help, when to use your phone vs the boat radio, DSC, and position polling. |
Boat Systems | Demystify the systems on a boat. You’ll learn about engines, plumbing, pumping out and refueling, using the stove, propane tanks, and batteries. |
Close Quarters Manuevering | Gain practice motoring and docking in tight quarters. You’ll take turns at the helm docking a 31′ to 41′ boat (depending on experience level) as well as maneuvering in the marina using such techniques as back and fill and three point turn. Build your docking confidence no matter the wind conditions. |
Performance Sailing | This classroom session will prep those who are taking the afternoon Performance Sailing session. Topics will include sail trim, including twist, and boat handling – all with the goal of sailing faster and more efficiently. Must sign up for Performance Sailing in the afternoon. |
Knots | Practice the essentials and learn something new with an experienced coach/instructor |
Afternoon Sessions | |
Anchoring | Dig into the topic of anchoring as you rotate through different roles on the boat. |
Taking Command | A class focused on building sailing leadership skills – from getting your crew working for you while docking, to working on leadership & communication while sailing |
Crew Overboard with Lifesling | Learn how to use this useful tool to return to a victim, attach them to the boat and then bring them back aboard (no actual swimmers!) |
Emergency Procedures on the Water | Fire? Sinking? Practice dealing with simulated emergencies with an experienced instructor out on the water. |
Performance Sailing | This track is for intermediate to advanced sailors looking to refine their sail trim and boat handling and is open to any sailor with a US Sailing BC certification or equivalent sailing resume. The morning session will consist of a short discussion of sail trim and boat handling. In the afternoon, we will apply these concepts, working on driving and trimming the boat to optimize our speed! This track will be sailed on the Colgate 26s. Participants must sign up for the morning session of Performance Sailing |
